Before and After!

Okay here I go. I made a deal with a fellow blogger to post before and after photos on April 1st. So to distract you from my before photo here is Lillian in all her cuteness! Look how cute she looks with her fingers in her mouth and lifting her head to the camera!


 Okay, so to be fair I'll start you from the begining of my journey this time. Here is my October 7th, 2009 photo. If you can't tell, I'm 40 weeks pregnant here. Little did I know I had 10 more days to wait for my baby girl. Next, is my January 1st, 2010 before photo. This is when the weight stopped coming off on its own and I decided to help it along and signed up for my half-marathon. Lastly, this is me on Monday when I got back from my run with Lillian.

January 1, 2010 - 192lbs

March 29, 2010 - 172lbs
While I'm not where I want to be yet, I've managed to drop over 20lbs in 3 months and that's not shabby at all. So I'll keep at it and we'll see where I get to in another 3 months. Besides I still have six months of maternity leave left and I can do a lot in that time!

March 2010 Summary.

So this has been a pretty busy month for me. Lots of running, and I ran an average of 60:15 a day which is exactly what I wanted to do. I ran an average of 6.8km a day which may be the same amount as last month but the difference is that this month most of it was running outside with my stroller and baby, and it's a LOT harder to run outside with a stroller than inside on a treadmill.

As for my weight loss I dropped 4.4lbs this month. It's actually more since I peeked yesterday and I have already dropped another 1.4lbs this week but seeing as I had to eat more to experiment about why my daughter wasn't gaining weight I'll take the 4.4lbs loss and look forward to more next month.

April 25th will be my marathon run so I'm hopeful that I'll manage to complete it in 3 hours. So far my best time is 3:12 so it would take a lot of work to knock that much off an outside run but I hope so.

Countdowns, Goals, and Peeking!

So today I ran another 12.5km in 1:52 and guess what, I hit my fitness goal for March! I have now run 1865 minutes and my goal was 1860! Woot I've hit my training goal, and have come so close to my weight loss goal. Now I know you're not supposed to peek and all that but I do anyway. It helps me and I know water and salt and such change your weight daily but anyway I peeked today and was down another 1.6lbs from Friday which would put me at a loss of 5.4lbs and I was aiming for 6.5lbs so I rocked it. Now I just have to watch my salt and I should keep this loss until Friday.

Now I'm focusing my attention on April and have set my new goals. Train for 1800 minutes, drop 4.8lbs and run a 21km route at least 4 times. Not too bad for goals for April. Now I can spend tomorrow resting and baking and reading to my daughter and walking with her and my dog around the neighborhood instead of running on a country road!

Photos and Feelings!!

I did a lot of thinking today when I was running. I managed a nice 10.6km run in 1:31:09, and I didn't have to wear my vest from my mom. My hubby was going to an event after work and he biked in today so he has it. Instead I wore my bright green shirt and my hubby's yellow t-shirt. I must have been quite a sight running with my red stroller in my crazy neon shirts and black sweat pants. That brings up an interesting point I thought I should write about. Please note todays blog may contain Too Much Information for some and will have feelings, so if you want to stop reading now I won't be offended.

I think everyone who wants to lose weight wonders how other people see them. I felt very hesitant about starting to run because I was nervous about what people would think of me when they saw me running. The funny thing is I don't worry about men as much as women. I was a big tom boy in school and I find there are three types of men (boob, legs and butt) and I have nice junk in my trunk and have always been a chesty girl so I don't worry what they think of me, it's the other running women. I don't run very fast because I have little legs and am pushing a stroller but I still worry what others think of me when I run.

When I first started running I was convinced every person who ran past me thought of me as a fat cow and secretly laughed at me for bothering. When I see larger people working out I always think good for you, keep up the great work, but somehow I never think others see me that way. Even now, I'm lighter than I have been with my husband I see feel uncomfortable running some days. I push my stroller and hope that people assume my extra weight is all baby weight, even though I'm already a few pounds under my pre-baby weight, 2.2lbs to be exact. I know I look good, and this is all about becoming healthy not to look good but I can't help feeling this way some days. I'm starting to worry a bit if I will ever be okay with how I look. If I will ever see the skinny girl in the mirror.

I thought that writing this blog might help me feel better when I go out to run tomorrow, and on April 1st I'll be posting a before and after photo of my last three months of work to show off what my running has done. On a funny note, there were two bulls on the dirt hill today and that made me laugh.

Lazy day Fun.

Did I run today? No! I only have 199 minutes left to train this month and I've hit my goal. (Yippy) But today was raining and cold and I went out to lunch with my friend and just didn't feel like training. Instead I played video games and had fun with my hubby and daughter.

Funny Things I Notice Running.

I smiled today while doing my 12.5km run with my hubby, dog and baby. Why you might ask? Well first I smiled because I got to pet "Red Rover"! Red Rover is a huge red mail box on the country route that I run. I have no idea how far into the route it is but I have decided it's the half way point on my 5.3km road that I run from my house (5.3km) and then turn around at the stop sign and run home (5.3km). The mailbox is half way between my house and the corner I turn around. It always makes me happy because I like fractions and it is the 3/4 of the route done point. Here is a list of all the funny things I do to entertain myself on my runs.

1/ Count the beer bottles on the side of the road. (I plan to walk the route one day and pick them up)
2/ Name and greet major markers along the route. (Red Rover)
3/ Laugh at farm animals. (today we saw a bull stuck on a dirt hill and laughed at it trying to get down - my hubby suggested it was laughing at us)
4/ Ipod. (normal but still entertaining)
5/ Mix up the route. (I have several ones I run so I don't get bored)

The other thing that made me smile today was the fact that while my hubby and I were huffing and puffing on our run with Pica and Lillian and as we kept struggling our dog was trotting beside us like she walks around the house. My husband was not impressed that she didn't actually have to put any effort into running but it was funny to see. By the time we got half way through she was tierd but I still laughed.

Today I also made my Super Busy Mommy Soup and this particular batch is super yummy and we ate the soup all day. So yummy! Tomorrow we're planning to go out for lunch at a local Thai place, and I can't wait! Should be a lot of fun and super yummy! After that we'll see if we manage to get another 10 or 12km run in!

Night time runs SUCK!

So when it was really cold outside I lived for running on my treadmill. I avoided going outside because it was freezing and I didn't want to expose Lillian to the cold. But since I've started running outside with my music in the sunshine and such, I no longer enjoy running on my treadmill as much, even though I have TV in my office.

So after the last few days with cold weather again, and really strong winds, I haven't been able to run outside and have had to run on the treadmill. Since Lillian doesn't nap in the afternoon much, unless she's in the stroller, so running during the day is out, but both last night and tonight I ran on the treadmill for 45 minutes. Though running at 10 or 11pm sucks a bit, at least I was running.

I'm hopeful for some nice weather tomorrow so I can run outside with my baby, but if the weather sucks, I can at least go with my dog and leave Lillian home with daddy, and after that make a big pot of Busy Mommy Soup for dinner!

Not so Skinny Baby!

Hurray! I went to my doctor this morning and Lillian gained 6.5oz in a week! He said babies her age should gain 6oz in a week so she is doing amazing. I'm so excited. He told me that whatever I'm doing is working and to keep it up. So I'm going to keep tracking her eating to make sure she eats 8-10 times a day, which usually means every 2.5-3 hours, and weigh her bi-weekly on our scale, which does 1/5th of pounds, to make sure her weight keeps moving up nicely. She goes back in 3 weeks so she should go up 18oz by that appointment so we're looking at her needing to be over 13lbs by then, so I know what I'm aiming for. My doctor even commented on her chubby cheeks. So now I'm feeling great and can stop stressing about my little one!

Almost didn't!

We all have those days. The ones where you're tired and just don't want to exercise and just eat junk. I had one of those today. I did eat my junk food, a chocolate rice krispie square and 25g of chips or chippies as my husband calls them. But I almost didn't run. It was windy, and I have been trying to feed my daughter more often so I didn't want to miss her feeding time, and I just didn't want to run. So what did I do, I ran 6.4km instead of 10.6km. More of it was straight into the wind with this route but it was shorter. Lillian only slept for 45 minutes of the 58 minute run. But I did it!!! I didn't want to but I did anyway! Hurray!

Feels good when you are faced with the little lazy monster on your shoulder and you just flick them off and put on your running shoes and go out anyway! I feel great today!

Tomorrow I get to take my baby to the farmer's market to get some local, fresh produce, and then do some kind of a run in the afternoon. Not sure about how long I'll run for, it will depend on how long the market takes.

Someone's Getting Heavier!

And no it's not me, it's my baby!!! Yesterday Lillian weighed 12.0lbs and today she weighs 12.2lbs! So in the last 4 days she went from 11.8lbs to 12.2lbs, which is great. I think that the things I'm doing now, night feedings, etc.. are really working and I'm so excited. I go back to my doctor on Friday morning to have her weighed on the doctor's scale.

Sotoday I'm feeling great about everything. Will hopefully have time to get a 10km run in this afternoon.

Slow day after the run.

So my usual rules applied today. I ran 21km yesterday, so that earned me a day off today. Hurray! Tomorrow I am going on a baby play date so I won't run tomorrow either but since it's supposed to rain so no biggie.

Today I'm feeling super blessed. I am feeling so happy after a week of being rather cranky. I just feel so loved by my husband, and am so in love with my daughter, and thankful for my mom and my friends and everything I've been blessed with. I can't stop smiling. So here is a photo my husband took of me this weekend after we headed out to the wedding of a friend of his. I wore this dress to our wedding rehearsal and on our honeymoon. It now fits again. Go me!

So to everyone out there having a bad day remember that you can make it through. Some days are harder than others but remember why you are on this journey and what makes you worthy of being fit and healthy and go after it. We all deserve to be happy!

Confession of Sorts and 21km Run!

Today I ran my second 21km route outside! Due to technical difficulties with my stop watch I don't have my exact time but it was around 3:10. With a baby running 21km is difficult on your own, but when your spouse is running the same half-marathon you are it takes a lot of planning to get both of us to run 21km in one day. We have a road that is 10.6km long so if you run from our house to the end and back, so do that twice and you have our half-marathon. But with a baby at home, we do it differently. First Steve, my husband, runs the route once, with the dog. He calls me when he's 1km from home (at least he tries to, today I was on the phone when he tried to) and I bundle up myself, and the baby and get her in the stroller, he drops off the dog (poor thing is exausted after 10km) and we head out together for the route. Then when we get back home he takes our baby inside to bottle feed her pumped milk, and shower, and play with her, while I head out for the second loop of my route. He left the house at 1:30pm and I got back at 6:10pm so you can see how long it takes this way but we manage to get it in even with a 5 month old little one!

So you may be wondering what my confession is. Lately a lot of people have been complimenting me on my running and my routes and how well I'm doing from not having run at all in December to what I do now. This sometimes makes me feel like a bit of a fraud. Now, don't get me wrong, I do all the runs I say, the distances and the times it takes but I feel like most people would consider what I do jogging not running. On the treadmill I can do 45 minutes of 5-5.5 miles per hour no problem, and yes that is running, but outside I only do 6.6-7.1km per hour (4.1-4.4 miles per hour) which isn't exactly all that fast. Now I know that most of the time I am pushing a baby in a car seat in a stroller and will honestly say that I can't push myself past 75% effort for fear that if I fall and/or lose control of the stroller she'll get hurt, but it's still a slower pace. Personally I consider it running at a comfortable pace. Today on my run I went the same speed for the first 45 minutes/5.3km so that's a big deal to me at least.

There now you all know the truth and if you want to compliment my "runs" I won't feel guilty or sneaky about it. Oh yah, and I ate my running cookie while I ran and didn't almost pass out like last time! :) Go me!

Baby Update.

So Lillian did gain weight in the ten days between doctor visits but not as much as he'd like so he suggested I add another bottle of formula and come back in a month. Being the paranoid and pro-active mom I am I plan to go back in a week and see how it's going. I also got some help from my husband's, coworker's wife. They have three children and she is a La Leche League coach/helper and he gave my husband their home phone number to call her. She told me Lillian isn't in the danger zone, and that she's getting enough food for brian and bone growth, which made me feel better, and that she should be eating 8-10 times a day and no longer than 8 hours between meals. Lillian was eating 6 times a day and sleeping from 9pm to 8am, so hense a problem! I've started to write down when she eats again and what/for how long, and we've got her up to 8 feedings now a day, and plan to work it up to 10. We are also doing a twilight feeding. That's where I put her to sleep at 9pm but before I got to bed at 11pm I sneak in, pick her up and nurse her again while she's asleep. For her it's working out well. She stays asleep, gets another 25 minute feeding in and never knows about it. The only down side is so eats so much that she pees through her cloth diaper with two soaker pads, and cover. But washing extra sheets and blankets is a small price to pay for a healthy baby. Plus once she gains more weight she'll fit into the larger diapers our service has, and that means we can get nighttime soakers which should absorb all of it. I've also gone back on Fenugreek. I had to take it at the start of nursing because of some issues and it is used to increase your milk supply. So now I have more available for her and I can pump more so if we have issues, my husband can feed her a bottle more often if she won't eat from me.

So to sum up she's gaining, but not as much as we'd like. I hope to sneak back to my doctor next Thursday/Friday to weigh her after a week of doing the extra feedings my La Leche friend recommends and see how that goes. I'll post about it again after I get her weighed there and hopefully we'll have some good news!

Silly things.

Okay so today I didn't get to run my 21km like I hoped and planned but I did manage to get in a nice 12.5km run. Go me! See when I do the 21km run outside I need a break in the middle to use the bathroom and refill my water belt, and today when I was taking my break, my baby decided she was hungry. My mother is up visiting for a few days and she had Lillian so Picasso joined me on my run and as I was getting ready to hit the trail again my mom came down and informed me that the baby was hungry and suggested I feed her. Normally I'd say to give her a bottle of pumped milk but lately we've been having problems with her not gaining weight and the last few days she's taken a real preference to the bottle so I stopped to feed her. Well after 20 minutes of feeding her and another 10 of rest I stood up to get back to running and my legs just screamed "NO MORE" so that was the end. I showered and went on with my day. I am a bit disappointment but that's okay. I can run again on Sunday and do a small run on Saturday. So I hope everyone has a lovely weekend and I'm going to get some rest. To help my baby gain weight I have started to feed her in the middle of the night or just before I go to bed so that makes me rather tired.

Happy 5 Months!

So today is my daughter's 5 month birthday! Crazy that she's already 5 months, but I just love being home with her and watching her grow and change all the time. The big exciting news? I ran 12.5km today which means I have already hit my two runs over 10km this week, and I did my run today in 1:49:21. I did do it faster on Sunday with my dog, but the difference is that Picasso is 98lbs and pulls me while Lillian in her stroller (totalling over 37lbs with just the stroller and baby - not including the car seat) slows me down. So adding 4 minutes to the run while pushing her is pretty good in my opinion.

As for my babies weight we are going back to the doctor to see how she's doing. We gave her a bowl of rice cereal on Tuesday for the first time and she had a lot of fun with it. I'm hopeful that she'll weight over 12lbs and will let you all know tomorrow. We have a lot of errands to run tomorrow so I may not be able to run very far, if at all but I'm aiming to do at least 5km! Good luck to everyone, and good night.

Nice day!

So here we've been having loads of sun and I am just loving it. Lillian is too! She gets to wear her cute little white hat to protect her eyes from the sun so she can nap.


Today I ran 10.6km in 1:34:21, so I got one of my two +10km runs out of the way today and I feel great about it. I love running in this lovely weather. So that's all that's new here for today! I spent all day cleaning yesterday which is why there was no post! Hope you're all loving the sunshine if you have it too!

I feel like a mail carrier!

Come rain or snow, wind or hail, I will be outside, running. Today it was raining, and it was cold, but I managed to run 12.5km in it with my dog. She didn't seem overly impressed and wanted to stay at one of the houses we passed during the run. My husband jokes that when she gets tired she decides she wants to live somewhere else and tries to stay there. I'm proud that I did my run today despite the weather. I looked up the last nine years for the weather on the day of our half-marathon and it only rained two of them, and it was between 6 and 16mm so we aren't talking major downpour. That makes me feel a lot better.

So my goal for this week is simple. I have seven days, and I want to run the 21km route once, and two runs should be double digits (10km or more). The rest of the days I can run what I feel like. I now have less than six weeks before our half-marathon so I need to kick things in high gear and that means doing some longer runs. Though Lillian has gotten used to the stroller and now sleeps for the whole run for pretty much every run! In total I've run 897 minutes so am well on my way to an hour a day, and yes that is JUST running not any other activity. I don't even count walking my dog!


Finally, here are the lies vs truth from last week.
* When I first met my husband I thought he was a pain and wished he'd just go away. -- LIE! I heard music in my head when I first met him.
* I have named all my pets after CSI characters. -- LIE! They are named after historical people, Einstein, Shakespeare, Cleopatra and Picasso (Pica).
* If Lillian had been a boy she would have had the middle name of Captain James T. Kirk. -- TRUTH! Captain Kirk's middle name is Tibirous and that is the middle name our first son will get should we have one.
* I love IMAX movies, and go as often as I can. -- LIE! I get really sea sick and IMAX is no exception.
* I think rice is the greatest side dish ever. -- LIE! I hate rice! I'm a pasta and Quinoa girl.
* I can't knit to save my life. -- LIE! I've been knitting since I was 5 and we have something like 12 scarves to prove it.

I blame the wind.

So I have a rule about running outside with my jogging stroller. Wind that is over 25km/hr means no running. We live in the country so we have a  LOT of open fields that I run by and several hills. Now combining hills and open fields means a lot of strong wind gusts and I don't want my stroller going over one of those hills if you know what I mean. Today the wind gusts were 33km/hr and it was raining, so running outside was not allowed. On top of that my baby didn't feel like napping so the treadmill was out. I broke down and bought formula because of her lack of chubbiness and since she was fussy and didn't want to nurse, and then didn't want to take the formula bottle and just spit it all out by the time I got her down for bed I am so mentally and emtionally exausted that running is just not happening. I want to curl up in a ball and go to sleep.

Well at least I've been doing so well with my running I can skip today and still have run an average of 60 minutes each day so far this month with 24 minutes extra, so I don't have to run too much tomorrow, while we go out of town to visit my in-laws.

Feeling Sad.

My little one doesn't seem to have gained any weight in the last week. She weighs the same today as she did last Friday, which is very depressing. I've eaten more fats this week but still lost 1.6lbs and while she's pooping more, which my mom says means she's getting more fat, it isn't sticking to her. I feel really sad because I feel like nothing I do is working and now I am toying with the idea of just getting her some formula to see if that helps. I really didn't want to but I'm at my wits end and I feel so horrible that she isn't gaining. My mom says her happy personality and active playing shows that she's healthy and fine. She even sat up today for the first time alone, but even her chubby thighs doesn't change the fact that she isn't gaining weight, and for a baby that's bad.

Funny day.

I had it all planned today. I was going to run 10km in the afternoon so my baby girl would get to take a LONG nap. Lillian got to take a long nap alright, but not in the stroller. She went to sleep before lunch, at 11:45am and slept through to 2:15pm! I normally run around 1pm or 2pm so having her sleep until nap time meant I had to wait to run until later, and she still napped so long that she didn't want to sleep on our run. So today I only went 5.2km but I did it in 42:56 which was my fastest time yet. Hopefully I'll get in a longer run tomorrow, and will have something more interesting to write!

Busy Mommy Soup.

I've adjusted nicely to my weight watchers and have learned many tricks to keep me full and happy. One of them is to make my points go further by being very efficient in the food I eat. Still, I find that some days 1 spoon of margarine isn't enough so I have to do a generous spoon as you can see to the left. It makes my popcorn just as yummy as at the movies!

Just kidding. I actually weigh everything I eat which helps keep me going so well on my goals right now and has me running so well. I find that weight works better for me in keeping things going well than measuring.

"Busy Mommy Soup" is the name of my new favourite meal. I also call it "Leftover Fridge Soup" since I use up all my veggies. I manage to create it often by keeping some simple staples around my house. These include, onions, carrots, celergy, barley and quinoa. I put them into a pot of water with garlic and then add in whatever other veggies are in my fridge and pantry. Today it was V8, mushrooms, cauliflower, kidney beans, spinach and swiss chard. Then I added chicken stock and it is super yummy. Even my husband likes it and when it comes to my soup he's a hit or miss. You have him to thank for the lovely photos on my blog today.

The other fun thing I have is my chocolate chip cookies. I have tweaked them since high school and they taste yummy. While not very calorie friendly I add ground flax seeds and extra oatmeal to them so they taste super yummy but have loads of fibre. I plan to alter them by adding loads of nuts, spelt flakes, honey and dried cranberries so that they'll have extra carbs and protein to eat when I do my 21km runs. That way I won't pass out like I almost did this weekend.

Got a bit hot today!

So apparently running in winter gear in 12 degrees makes you really hot. I had to stop and take my coat and such off during my run today and store them in my stroller. Lucky for me Lillian was already asleep and didn't mind. I managed to run my 6.4km route in 54:21 which is actually the fastest I've run it. I didn't realize it until I got home and recorded my time. Not bad considering I was trying to do a slow run to rest after my big run Sunday. I hope this nice weather keeps up.

I think I need to buy new running shoes for outside running, or at least wear my new ones outside. I found my shins and right knee were sore after the big run but my hubby was fine and he wore his new shoes. Lesson learned. I have a lot of errands to run tomorrow so hopefully I'll manage to get home in time to run in the afternoon sun.

Even if she's not gaining weight, Lilly's getting really good at holding her head up and now she can sit up in her chair really well. Soon she'll be able to sit up on her own. Right now she's discovered how to pull off her shoes and socks and enjoys it. Here is a cute photo of her playing since I can't stop posting photos of her.

Big News!

So I have officially lost all my baby weight! I started trying really hard as of January 1st and now my 18lbs are gone. Time to lose the weight I wanted to lose before I got pregnant with Lillian but I'm happy either way! Today was my day of rest, running wise, and I quite enjoyed it, though I did still go for a walk with my dog and daughter. Now I'm looking forward to a week of nice weather and getting in lots of running for my marathon. It's now only 7 weeks away! Eeeeekkk! I'm starting to get nervous now, especially after how long the run took me yesterday and the whole almost passing out thing.

On a positive note, I have been weighing my baby at home for the past few days. I get on the scale and weigh myself, then my husband hands me our baby, naked, and I weigh us togther. I've been peed on twice now in four days, but I've also seen her go from 11.4lbs to 11.8lbs, and yes the 11.8 was AFTER she peed on me, so at least the weight seems to be heading up. I think all the fat my hubby is having me eat, because my doctor suggested it, is actually helping! I'll keep you all posted on how she does for the rest of this week. Hope you're all doing well and remember to keep trying and not get discouraged. Getting into exercise can be hard but if you find a fitness activity you love, and can do with family/friends it makes it so much more rewarding!

Loving the Weather!

So this week we've had beautiful weather and I have taken full advantage of it getting outside to run with my baby and enjoy the sunshine. Today I did a full 21km run outside. It took me 3:12:11 to do it and a lot of funny routes but I did it. I'm feeling really sore now but that's okay since tomorrow I will take a little run and then take Tuesday off since I'm going to visit my girl friends out of town for a baby play date. The run was great. I started it late morning after a big breakfast, or at least what I thought was a big breakfast. After the run ended I took a shower and when I got out felt very dizzy and ended up on the floor, but my hubby knew what to do and brought me some biscuits and milk so that I got my sugar levels back up and was good to go. I've never fainted in my life but today I was very close.

I set myself the goal of running an average of 60 minutes a day in March and I'm well on my way so far. I've managed to get in 575 minutes already and that feels great. So far I've run every day this month too. That won't last for long but at least I am a bit ahead now so when I have the odd day off I will stay be good. Right now I'm beating my hubby for minutes run too, something I am always pleased with.

So Far So Good.

I didn't want to run today, but my baby wouldn't take a nap, so I had to get her to sleep which meant outside in the stroller we went. I could have gone for a walk in the normal stroller but instead we bundled up and off we went for a run when I felt blah. In the end I ran 9.4km which is the longest outside run I've ever done and it took me 1:26:50 and I'm thrilled that I made it so far. It was windy and I had the wind going right in my face the first 3km and almost gave up but I didn't and I'm so excited. On a positive note, I've almost lost my baby weight now, and the mud is pretty much gone!

I got my new Ipod Nano the other day and it makes my run a lot more fun. Now we'll see what my running has in store tomorrow.

Another Good Run.

So after four days of running outside (Sunday - Wednesday) I felt an indoor run was in order, since my shins are a bit sore. I figured a run on my treadmill in my new shoes on the soft belt would be a nice change from the dirt road/concrete run outside. I had a lovely 6.6 mile (11km) run with my new Ipod nano after my little girl was with her daddy getting ready for bed. I feel great, and am excited to run outside again tomorrow in the lovely weather we've been having lately.

So far I'm on par for my 60 minutes running a day, and Lillian is sleeping better from the outside runs too! Hope you're all doing well in your goals!

Could running be evil?


So what all has my new crazy love of running gotten me you ask? Well in 8 short weeks I'm 16 lbs lighter, I am getting more exercise than I normally would in a year, I've spent a lot of money on running shoes, I feel amazing, I sleep better, I'm happier and my baby has stopped gaining weight. Yes you read that right. I am nursing a 4 1/2 month old, see photo to the right, and she has stopped gaining weight like she used to. At this age she should be gaining about a pound a month, but she has only gained 20g in the last 10 days. Yes less than 1 oz in 10 days. So after seeing my doctor today I've been told to scale back the weight loss for the next two weeks and up my fat intake, think 2% milk, olive oil, flax seed, etc... and see if that extra fat makes its way into my milk. If it doesn't I may have to start putting her on formula which isn't something I want to do. So now I have to face the fact that my love of running and healthy diet may be the reason my perfect baby isn't gaining the weight she should be, and honestly I feel so guilty it makes me sick!

My mother tells me she's healthy, fit and very alert, so she's fine, but I've seen her growth chart and when I started running and trying to drop the baby weight she stopped gaining weight, and that hurts. I wish I could take it back but I can't so now I have to work at eating more, when I'm used to eating less and hope that the extra food makes a difference. If not, she'll be 5 months at the next visit, I'll start her on iron enriched rice cereal and see how that works for her, and maybe some mushed food to help, but formula may be in her future and I don't want that. So now I'm sad today, and have to drop my pound loss goal for the month but I'll keep my 1860 minutes of activity goal and see what happens in two weeks.

Mud everywhere!

So I went for another run outside today with my daughter and it was mud everywhere. I'm glad we get to run on a country road because that's where the half-marathon will take place in April, though on the other side of town but dirt road none the less. Well with all the snow from this weekend melting it's a real mess out there. I got rather dirty yesterday and today was worse. I even hit a hill where half was mud and half was pressed snow and I couldn't stop as I went down the hill. I had to hand onto the jogging stroller and try to force my feet to slow down. It was a big scary but I noticed some tire marks and got my feet into them and that gave me the needed traction to slow down. I wanted to go a bit further than my usual distance, and my extra leg that I usually take is all hills and dirt so that was out. I instead ran to the end of a real street that was paved and then back. It added 1.1km making my run 7.5km which I managed in 1:08:02. My legs were very sore and tired at the start but I stuck it out, and am proud that I didn't cheat and take the shorter route, which I was very tempted today. Now I'm off to make soup for dinner and plan my new route I want to run tomorrow, one with almost all paved roads.

Goals and Sunshine.

So today I decided to set a goal for myself in March. Nothing too lofty but I'm psyched! I want to train for my marathon 1860 minutes and drop 6.5lbs. The running minutes average out to 60 minutes per day for March which is 5 minutes more than my February average so is achievable. The weight loss would put me into the 160's where I don't think I've been since high school and that is very exciting. To help keep me motivated I started the March Fitness Challenge on the weight watchers boards I'm on so I have a great group of people to help keep me motivated and who I can help motivate. Yippy!

So to start March off right my baby girl and I hit the road today. She got bundled up and had a great nap with some sunshine and fresh air, I had a 6.4km run in slush, mud, snow, mud, water, mud, wind and oh yah mud. Half the run is on country roads and they were not pleasent but we made it and tomorrow when I run I will hunt for a more paved route to take! But I'm glad I did it and it took me 57:39 so I am already 57 minutes into my 1860 for March.
