April 2010 Summary.

Okay so it's the last day of April. Crazy!! I've finished my marathon, and did so in the time I wanted. I didn't hit my workout time goals but I had a wonderful month. Great stats for April! Ran Waterloo half-marathon in 2:48:57 hitting my goal of being under two hours. I ran for a total of 158.8km this month or 5.3km a day. Time wise I ran 22 hours, 40 minutes or 45 minutes a day, which isn't the 60 minutes a day I hoped for, but when the month started I was not aware of how much I would need to reduce my running the two weeks before the marathon, so it was a little over zealous. Plus after the actual run I came down to visit my mom for the following week and it's not as easy to run here because it's not my normal route, but more so I don't have room in the car for all my running stuff, like water belt, stroller cover, etc...

So my weight loss has gone really well this month too. I dropped 7.8lbs! There may actually be more, or less, but again since I'm out of town on Friday which is my weighing day I can't weigh myself so last week's total will have to do. Overall though I'm thrilled with this month. I did my first marathon, while having a cold, and beat the 3 hour mark.

Now I just have to make sure I don't gain weight when we go to Germany for our vacation in May!

First Post-Race Run.

So today I had my first post-race run and it was good. I thought it would be really hard and that I would hurt but it went really well. I am working on speed now so I did 12 sets of 2.5 minutes where I ran as hard as I could for 60 seconds and then walked for 90 seconds. I ended up doing 7km in total. I did 5 minutes of warm ups, 30 minutes of my running/walking sets, and then jogged/walked the rest of it.

I'm out of town visiting my mom so I had to run on a strange road but that's okay. Being here meant I had her to take care of Lillian while I ran. She's been such a good girl. She's going crazy for real food now that we've started to feed her fruits and veggies. In the past few days she's eaten cauliflower, apple, apple in oat bran, beans and asparagus. She's just loving it. You can tell when she likes it because she dive bombs the spoon and squeels for more. Such a cutie!!

Day of Rest.

So now that the marathon is over I'm taking a few days off. I was thinking of maybe running today by my legs and lower back are still a bit sore, so I may do a walk with the monkey and then wait until tomorrow to really start moving a bit faster. I feel great having done the race, but my cold is still here and being a major pain.

So my new training plan goes as follows. Since I'm running a 10k in a little under 2 months, I'm really going to work on speed. I'll run 5 to 7km two or three times a week and work on going as fast and hard as I can, something that I couldn't really do before because I was going for distance. Then one or two days a week I'll push myself to do the 10k as hard and fast as I can. On those runs I'll either have to let my husband watch my daughter or have him push her while we run. I also want to sneak one or two days of cross training in since I'm planning to go back to kickboxing. So here's an example.

Mon: Kickboxing or 5-7 km
Tues: 5-7 km
Wed: Kickboxing or 5-7km
Thurs: Rest
Fri: 5-7 km
Sat: 10k
Sun: 10k

I'm looking forward to this. I'm sure the first few weeks of kickboxing will hurt and my running won't be so hot but that's alright. Kickboxing is fun for me and will help me get stronger in places other than my legs!

New Adventures!

So here are the funny and/or enjoyable things that happened today, or will be in the short future.

I got to meet my blogging friend Sarah (Back in Step) since she also attended the marathon! She kept me running pretty good at the start which was nice, and just getting to meet someone who you get to share the intimate details and feelings about your life with on a regular basis, was really cool!

I've picked my next 3 races now! I'm going to do the Waterloo Classic (10k) in June, the Laurier Loop (5k) at the start of October and the Horror Hill (15k) at the end of October. It's really exciting that I have picked three races to do. I didn't want to wait until October to run another race, and the 10k in my town in June seems perfect! I'm so excited. I love that I can spend the next two months speed training and then focus on the hills in this area for the 15k in October.

I'm so excited! I have a new adventure planned and that makes me smile!

The adventure that started Four months ago.

On January 1st I bounded to my husband and told him that I wanted to run the Waterloo marathon. He smiled at me and said "me too", but I don't think he knew what he was in for. A few short days later we'd purchased our amazing baby jogging stroller and I started to run in the cold in my tight sweat pants in the snow. Now I have real running clothes, with fancy running shoes, stop watch, reflective vest, and a medal from my first half-marathon. It's crazy what can happen in a few short months. I am now a runner for life and that is the greatest thing I have ever done for myself, my husband and my daughter.

This week I was sick with a nasty cold but I didn't let that stop me. My husband and I were not sure if we could do the run but we did and I'm so glad we did. I wasn't last at all which I thought for sure I would be and I beat my old personal best by about 9 whole minutes and I'm so excited about this. I feel like I could take on the world, and can't wait for my baby to wake up from her nap and cuddle her. I wanted to be healthy for my baby and now I've gone and become a runner for life. After resting up a few weeks I'll start training for the Horror Hill run and work on my speed. I know slow and steady wins the race but I think I can go faster.

Now it's time to rest!

Race Facts:
  • Times to finish half-marathon: 2:48:57 (my stop watch) and 2:48:55 (chip time).
  • 55/61 in women 21-29
  • 179/200 in women
  • 338/364 total half-marathoners

The race that may not come.

Today we went and picked up our numbers and shirts for the marathon tomorrow. As of this moment we don't know if we are going to run it. My mother was going to come to town tonight to watch our daughter during the race, and my father-in-law and grandmother-in-law were going to come and greet us at the finish line, but now we have told them not to come. I contacted the people in charge of the marathon this morning and learned that if we're running the race and we cannot finish there are volunteers who will drive you back to the finish line so with that knowledge I at least want to try to do it, but since I may get 2km in and have to stop I don't want people to drive 1.5-2 hours to come here for nothing. My girlfriend is going to take my baby for me in the morning, she's even getting up at 6am to do so, and we are going to go the race and do our best.

My friends made me feel good by telling me how much my running has inspired them, but I still felt a bit like a loser for letting a cold beat me and take me out of a race that I have been training for four months to run. The best thing said was from a running friend of mine, and she said "Remember, you're going to be a runner for the rest of your life. Whether or not you run your first half tomorrow or another day won't change that." These words stuck with me all morning and now I feel like I at least want to try. If I can't finish, I can't finish, but maybe, just maybe I will be able to get through the whole thing and even if I'm exausted after imagine how proud I'll feel!

Time remaining to half-marathon: 0 days, 19 hours, 23 minutes.

Wish me luck!

Too Close to Call.

Okay, so I'm still feeling icky today but I did manage to accomplish all the things I wanted to get done today, including errands, baking, cooking soup, playing with my daughter, driving my husband to and from work, and also changing our sheets and towels. I typically change our bed sheets and towels on a bi-weekly schedule, one week towels the next sheets, but when we are sick I feel the need to do them both at once, and wash the dovet covers in teatree oil as well. So I accomplished all those things today and while I don't feel my fabulous self, with the help of Advil I'm doing okay. So now I'm hopeful that a good sleep tonight will help fend off this evil cold. I know when I'm sick my exercise sucks for a good two weeks afterwards so I won't be breaking any records on Sunday but I am determined to do the race, even if I totally suck at it! My game plan for tonight is simple. I'll go to sleep when we put Lillian down around 9pm and my husband will give her a bottle for her 11pm feeding. Then in the morning he'll sleep in and I'll take care of her, except for the 30 minutes I have to take my dog to the vet when he'll have to make sure Lilly doesn't disappear but otherwise he'll get to sleep and if he needs a nap later in the day he'll get it.

On a more positive note, I dropped another 2lbs this week and now for the first time in the plus seven years that I've been togehter with my hubby I actually weigh less than him. I have to say that feels pretty amazing and I am so proud of how far I've come. I've managed to lose 28lbs since January first and that leaves me with another 20lbs to go until my goal weight, providing that I actually decide to stay at that weight. I know that once I hit the right weight my body will be happy there and the weight will pretty much stall and stop coming off but until I hit that number I won't actually know. Plus after I drop the weight I will have to focus more on getting toned since right now I'm all about getting the weight off. I have to be careful though, I'm one of those people who have the genes to bulk up super fast. Anywho back to resting and my orange juice.

Time remaining unitl the Half-Marathon: 1 day, 13 hours, 10 minutes.

Getting Scary Close Now.

Time left to Waterloo Half-Marathon: 2 days, 10 hours, 40 minutes.

I am so sick it sucks! My hubby has been sick for a few days and now I've got it, BIG TIME! I have a stupidly sore throat that makes my gag reflex twitch everytime I swallow, and my head is not feeling so hot. I hate my husband right now. He should have slept in the guest room if he was this freaking sick. Now he's starting to mend and I'll be in the thick of it for Sunday. Grrrrrrrrrr. Four months of training so I can be sick and suck ass on my race. I am so not happy about this.

On the plus side I've picked my next race. I'm going to run the Horror Hill 15k race in October. I'm super excited about it because this route is right by my house so I can actually run the route itself whenever I want. The hills may be a bit of a challenge with the stroller but that's okay by me. So today I did a small 6.4km run and that's my last run before Sunday's race. I'm off to bed now to rest up with my lovely cold and husband who is driving my CRAZY with his constant coughing and nose blowing.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

The countdown continues

So today I was allowed to run. Woot! I did a nice easy run of 7.6km in 1:09 which is not too bad. Tomorrow I get to run too and then it's no running until Sunday! I'm getting really excited and also super nervous now. My husband has managed to get a cold and passed it to the baby. As of yet I'm okay but I so hope I don't get sick before the big day. My action plan is to eat healthy and sleep extra the next few days. Lillian only has a small cough and running nose but Steve is really tired and drained. So here's hoping that my hubby gets well in time for our big run.

Also it currently is supposed to rain on Sunday but I'm holding out hope that it will be nice. Rain here is usually hit and miss but either way I have trained to run in the rain so I'll be fine regardless. Now I'm starting to hunt for a new race to run sometime between August and October. I was thinking the Oktoberfest 10k but it actually falls on our daughter's birthday so that isn't going to happen. Anyone have any race suggestions for me in the GTA, Hamilton, Waterloo-Kitchener area?

Time left until Waterloo Marathon: 3 days, 13 hours, and 27 minutes.

Chubby Baby!

So I didn't get to run today. Lillian did great with her shots but it was crazy windy here today but that's okay. We went for a nice walk and my legs are feeling a bit tired so an extra day off won't hurt me. I am so happy about her doctor's visit because she gained 400g in the last month and everyone is thrilled. I'm so glad that she's now on the rigth track weight wise and I only need to weigh her weekly to make sure she stays at this rate. So there's my good news for the day!

Getting Closer!

So it's officially less than a week to go now. I didn't run today because it was my husband's turn and I had cleaning to do. I'm hoping to do a run tomorrow but my baby is going in for her six month shots so it will all depend on how she's feeling! I can't wait for my marathon and will write more tomorrow.

Time to Waterloo Marathon: 6 days, 11 hours, 35 minutes! Woot!

Less Than a Week.

I love weekend runs since I can leave Lillian at home with her daddy if the weather isn't the greatest. Today I ran my usual 10.6km and as a special treat I had my friend Cecilia running with me. She biked to my house and then we ran my usual route and then she biked home. The weather wasn't very pleasent, we had wind gusts up to 50km/hr and we even got hailed on for a bit. It's just crazy that yesterday is was 17 degrees and today I got hailed on! Welcome to the crazy weather in my hometown and thank goodness Steve was home to take care of the baby.

So my marathon is now almost less than a week away. Holy cow that is so exciting and so terrifying at the same time! So what did I do today other than run, well I ran errands and made nachoes for dinner. Super healthy choice right? Well we make them at home so we use multi-grain nachoes and low fat cheese and a ton of veggies so they are a lot healthier. We also use 2% plain yogurt in place of sour cream so that helps too. They were delicious and sometimes you just need something different.

I'm starting to plan what to do after my half-marathon now, and I plan to rejoin my kickboxing but I am also thinking of running another race. There is a 10k in our city in October which is about two and a half weeks after I get back to work. The fun thing will be that I can work more on speed instead of distance and that means a lot of smaller (5-6km) runs and the occasional 10km run which will be nice for the hot summer month. A shorter run is better in the hot weather, and can be done much easier before Lillian wakes up or after she's in bed. My 5.2km route only takes 45 minutes while my big one can be anywhere from 1:25 to 1:50 so it's nice to have a shorter route. I think it will be good for me to have another goal after this race. I was worried that I would start slacking but Cecilia suggested I find another race to sign up for and I'm thinking this one would be a good one since it's right after I get back to work, and I can still do most of my training before I head back to the office.

Time to Waterloo Half-Marathon: 7 days, 13 hours and 7 minutes!

Friends are great!

So today is was a bit windy here, and by a bit, I mean 33km/hr wind gusts! Eikkk! So I was sad and thought that running today might not happen, but then my best friend stepped in and came over to sit for my little monkey moo while I took the dog for a run. We just did the standard 10.6km which took me 1:30:31 today so woot. Tomorrow my co-worker friend is coming over and we're going to run the route together. I'm pretty excited since she's run a lot of marathons and really knows what she's doing so I may get a few pointers, and either way it's always fun to run with someone else. So today I'm really happy to have such awesome friends, and I'm excited because I get to eat pancakes tomorrow. I know that sounds funny but I don't eat them often and I love them, and I need to carb up for my runs.

Oh yah I weighed myself today and I am down another pound and it was my measure week and I dropped another 3cm off my body. In total I'm down 33cm off my waist, thigh, hips and bust which is just crazy when you think about it. I only have 8 days and I am only running 4 of them! I'll run Sat, Sun, Wed, Thurs and then rest up for the big day!

Time left until Waterloo Marathon: 8 days, 11 hours, 25 minutes.

Way too hot today.

I'll admit it, I love the cold. I'm a winter baby, born December 22nd so obviously I prefer it cold. There's something nice about putting on a big fuzzy sweater or snuggling with my hubby. I always say you can add another layer really easily but taking one off takes a lot of work. This summer may be better than others since I have lost 25lbs which means that there will be less fat to insulate me. So today it was pretty warm. It actually got up to 26 degrees, and 24 degrees while I was running. I think I may need to switch my time away from 1-3pm since that is the hottest part of the day. I even left my dog at home today because she's black and isn't overly fond of the hot sun.

So I did run today and I'm thrilled I did even if the sun was too hot. On Saturday I'm going to run with a friend of mine who is also doing the half-marathon but she's run a bunch of marathons so I feel bad that she's going to pretty much walk beside me but she knows I'm a newbie so I doubt she'll hold it against me.

Tomorrow is my weigh in day and I've been pretty snack happy this week so I don't know how it will go. Fingers crossed!

Time left until Waterloo Marathon: 9 days, 11 hours, and 20 minutes.

Counting down.

I'm always amused when my day off is busier than my normal day. Today I ran about 8 errands and didn't run since it was my day of rest. Tomorrow I plan to run again and maybe go to my mommy and me class at the YMCA.

Time to Waterloo Marathon: 10 days, 10 hours and 43 minutes.

It's coming to get me!

So the marathon is now only 11 days, 16 hours and 7 minutes away and I haven't run yet today. Opps! My daughter has this ability to be so cute that I don't want o run because it would mean I can only look at her and not play with her or give her the attention she deserves. Today she was on the bed while I was finishing get ready to run and when I wanted to leave she'd found an envelope and was playing with it. As I took it away to put her coat on she looked so sad I almost cried. I stopped there and decided today I would play with her instead and run after my husband gets home from work. So I'm trying to figure out what to have for dinner now and am hoping that my hubby gets home in time for me to still run outside. If not I'll be running on the treadmill. But one big thing is my daughter played with her blocks for the first time today! Actually they are my old baby blocks and she had a lot of fun knocking my towers down this afternoon, so not running was worth it for today.

Monday, April 12, 2010

Let the Countdown Begin!!

Okay, slight panic moment. I only have 13 days until my marathon! Actually considering it's almost bedtime here 12 days until I run my marathon. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek! I'm really excited but getting a bit nervous too. I've always said I'm in it to finish not win it, but I want to finish in under 3 hours if I can and I've only done that once during practice runs and that was only by 2 minutes! I guess I have to keep a positive outlook and just do my best. My husband always wanted to run a marathon and figured he'd have to wait until he retired to do it and here we are at 26 (me) and 30 (him) running our first half-marathon. After it's over I plan to switch from running long distances slowly, to running shorter distances faster. Speed is something I'm not so great at so I'm going to go back to interval training and work on that. So I have something to look forward to once I finish the race. That and I can go back to kickboxing classes since I won't need to run every day anymore! Yippy!

Days left to Waterloo half-marathon: 12 days, 9 hours, 56 minutes.

Sunday, April 11, 2010

Busy Busy day.

So today we had a sort of meet and greet for our theatre friends who haven't met our baby yet and what did I do while I should have been cutting up veggies and getting my house ready? That's right I went for a run! I did 10.6km in 1:25:27 which is my best time for that route yet! Woot! I have included a photo containing my new running clothes and showing how I take my pooch for a run with me. I tie her leasch around my waist and off we go. I love my new running clothes and feel that I really look the part while I'm out there. In case you're wondering what the white thing in my hand is, that would be an old cloth diaper that I use as a running sweat rag. And acutally no it is NOT from Lillian, it's actually from me. That's right, that rag there is 26 years old and it's now a sweat rag. Crazy, but shows you the quality of things from back then. The other great thing is that I ran in the morning today so I was outside at 9:30am running which is good since I'll need to do that on the race day and right now I run in the afternoons.

Anyway it's late and I should head to bed. Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Finding the balance.

Last night when I went to bed I set everything up for running 21km this morning. As you can tell I'm not running. I had to take my dog to the vet at 9am and on my way back I started thinking. Running has become very important to me, so much infact that it often takes priority over other things. It seems the only thing that wins over running is Lillian. This morning I woke up with pretty sore legs and a bad headache, so on my way home I figured instead of 21km I'd just do 10km. Then I got really excited and I started to plan the day. I often do this day planning thing without discussing it with my husband, so it doesn't always work out well. I started planning going out for breakfast, visiting the park with Lillian, etc.. and when I got home I found out my hubby wanted to do a 21km run today too. When we both do that distance it takes a minimum of 5 hours. So I was going to do 10km but my daughter was playing with my hair, and my legs hurt, and I said enough, I'm going to listen to my body and take today off too. I have my marathon in 2 weeks and the last time my legs were this sore was when I overtrained. So today I will rest and play with my daughter and take her to the park with my hubby to take family photos and all will be right with the world.

Hope you're all enjoying the lovely sunshine, because as you can see we sure are!

This is just plain crazy.

So I'm doing fine on my running goal for the month and am proud of that but do you know what's crazy? I'll tell you. I wanted to lose 4.8lbs in April, and I picked that amount because it would put me at exactly 25lbs lost since January 1st and last week I was down 2.8lbs and this week, well down 2.0lbs. So it's April 9th and I've hit my weight loss goal for the month.

HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE???? I know I worked hard this week eating well after Good Friday and Easter Saturday dinners but still, that's just plain crazy! So now I guess I'll need to lose extra this month to balance off next month when I go away on vacation for a week and a half. We're not going too long since we'll be taking our then 7 month old, and we're going international to visit my family in Germany. Couldn't run today as it was snowing and really cold here but am hopeing to do another 21km run tomorrow but we'll see if that weather allows for it!

I'm not made of Sugar.

Sugar melts, I don't so I ran outside even though it rained. I ran 10.2km and I only got rained on for 4km of it. My dog seemed to enjoy herself too even though she got wet, and my baby, well Lillian likes the sound of water so she slept the whole 1:28 that I ran for. There are good and bad things when you run outside.

Negative:
  • my dog smells
  • my clothes and shoes get muddy
  • my stroller sinks into muddy roads
  • usually it gets colder
Positive:
  • my baby naps (this is very important for a baby who hates napping)
  • my baby gets fresh air
  • my dog gets walked (98lbs beast needs her exercise)
  • I get a decent workout without overheating and get fresh air
  • I get out of the house for a bit (for a social woman on mat leave this is a big deal)
  • I feel amazing! (most important one)
So the verdict is simple, even with the icky feeling of being wet, I personally find wet shins to the be the worst thing that can happen to me - yes I'd rather be stung by a wasp or bit by a dog than have wet shins, the great feeling of having run and having a happy well napped baby it always worth it!

Me 1: Rain 0!

Hahaha! I ran outside today and didn't get wet. It was raining all day and I had a pretty losey morning with lots of stuff going wrong, which I won't go into, and by the afternoon I needed to ran badly! Something about running makes me feel so good. I think it might be the endorphins. So I fed and bundled my baby, put her in her car seat, strapped her to the stroller, grabbed my dog and off we went. We didn't go far because the sky looked like it could start pouring rain at any time but we did 5.2km in 43 minutes and I felt great afterwards. I am thrilled that I managed to sneak in a little run around the rain. Hopefully it will be nice like that again tomorrow so I can sneak in another little run.

I'm looking forward to my Friday morning WI this week even though I know I won't lose as much as last week thanks to Easter weekend, but I am really confident that I will remain in the 160's and that makes me happy. On another happy note, Lillian had sweet potato today, and goodness me she loved it! It was all gone in like 15 minutes and very little ended up on her.

Hope all is well with all of you!

Rain, Rain Go Away!

So it's supposed to rain all week. Boo on that. I hope I manage to get some outside runs in this week despite the nasty weather. If Lillian naps, I may be able to get a few runs in inside. I'll keep you posted on my progress for this week.

Lovely Weekend.

I had a great weekend. I spent Friday and Saturday with my hubby and little one visiting my mother. She loves spending time with Lillian, and is so good with her. I love watching them together. There is something special about seeing your mom be a grandmother. It's a very touching thing and I love being part of it and I am so happy to see the special bond my daughter is developing with all her grandparents. My family is German and grandparents were an important part of my youth. My husband's grandmother took him to the doctor and music lessons, and was always nearby so he feels the same way. We are making sure that our parents are an important part in our daughter's life.

Today I had a great day. I managed to run my first 21km trek for this month. I did it in 2:59 on the dot and I am thrilled because it means I knocked 11 minutes from my last run. This time I was strollerless but it was still great. I'm also excited because I finally got some new workout gear. I have been running in my old sweatpants and random t-shirts. I went shopping my mom, Lillian and my hubby on Saturday and we went to a bargin shop and I found exactly what I wanted, black capri pants with matching tops. I now have two pairs of black pants, and two tanktops. One has blue and black pants with a blue top, the other is black and purple with a purple top. I wore the blue one today on my run and as funny as it sounds I felt like a real runner.

Now I'm off to rest up a bit since my legs are pretty sore, suprise, suprise!!

Evil Wind.

So I didn't get to run outside today. We had a crazy windy day today. I wanted to go running but with 35km/hr wind gusts that was not going to happen. Instead we went for a walk with my dog and I got to run for 20 minutes on my treadmill. I'm hopeing to get a longer run on the treadmill after my husband gets home. Lilly has been rather attention happy today. This weekend we're going to go visit my family so I may not post until Sunday. Hope you all have a wonderful Easter weekend.
