It's official! I need a comma!

So I just got off the treadmill from running while my baby girl was napping and I have done it! As of January 1, 2010 I have run +1,000km, one thousand and five to be exact!! There is something truly special about that little comma. Being an English major in school I do appreciate the value of a comma, but there is something truly remarkable about how much work went into this particular one.

I feel like a million bucks! Now how should I reward myself? I think it’s time for a new pair of running shoes. I have already gotten my lovely Garmin watch from my hubby but now I think I need to spoil the little feet that got me where I am today. I’ll have to hit the shoe store as soon as the little lady wakes up.

Happy Canada day to all my Canadian readers tomorrow! And just for fun here are a few examples of just how far I've actually run!
  • 3% of the earth's circumfrence
  • distance from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Quebec City, Quebec
  • the entire coastline of Jamaica
  • 1/3 of the length of the St.Lawerence river
  • from the north end of England to the south end

June 2010 Summary.

I am in aw at all the things I have managed to do in this one short month!

So to start off with I ran a total of 166.32 km, or 5.54km a day, in 22 hours and 47 minutes, or 45:57 minutes a day. While this isn’t the highest I’ve ever done, the time ran is almost identical to April, and yet in 7 extra minutes I ran 7.52km extra. So that makes me feel really proud since it’s quite an addition. I can’t wait to see what next month brings.

Funny enough I also dropped 4.4lbs this month which happens to be the same as in March. This seems to be the month of repeats, but I don’t mind repeats when they are success stories. I know the weight loss could have been more but I’ve started to slow down a bit. I feel a bit sad since I won’t hit the x-weighted target number they set for me in time for the 26 week challenge but who cares! I’ve lost 35.4lbs since January 1st and they wanted me to hit 40. I’ll take the great results I have and I plan to keep going. I want to be in the 140’s and hit 142 by the time I go back to work on October 1st.

I also managed to run bring my total kilometers run in 2010 into the four digits. Can you see that lovely 1005km in the daily mile box on the side? That number fills me with pride.

So all in all it’s been an amazing month, and I can’t wait to see what July will bring, though I don’t plan to do any fitness goals next month. I already track what I do like crazy and I feel I have earned a month off, especially since I want to visit my mom and dad this month for a bit!

Almost there! 2.5km to go!

So I only need to go another 2.5km and I will have hit the 1000km mark!! Crazy! My run today happened in two small runs since my baby woke up during my treadmill run. I really wanted to run outside today and I got to but not until Steve got home from work. Last week was the crazy heat and this week it's crazy wind. I just can't win, and wind gusts over 30km/hr means no stroller.

I'm hopeful I'll get to go to kickboxing tomorrow but my wrist has been hurting so we'll have to see. Either way I did pretty good with my June goals so I'm happy either way. Hope everyone has a good night and I promise to write more tomorrow.

First Morning Run.

Okay so I managed to get a morning run in today. I'm not sure what's up with my little lady, since this was the second run in a row that she just wouldn't go to sleep while running. She did eventually go to sleep but not until we were 3km in, and it was only a 5km route. I was pretty sore and tired today so I decided to run the small route (5.2km) because it was short and has the least amount of hills. But despite my getting out early it was still really hot. I'm having bad luck with weather lately. It's like the sun sees me and comes out just to bug me. It was 23 degrees but felt like 31 so that really sucked. Hopefully tomorrow will go better, but I have to remember that I ran, and with how crazy things have been getting around here lately (the baby is almost crawling and now has two teeth and we may be signing up for swimming lessons this week which would start this week) at least I am getting the runs in.

I have a feeling I won't be hitting my running goal time wise this month but I'm going to do my best to get as close as I can. Same with the loss goal, but it's so close I'm okay with it. Besides I'm busy playing with my monkey and making sure she's okay in this heat.

Looking on the Bright Side.

So today I wanted to run 12km. I planned to do it first thing in the morning before my hubby left to see his father. To manage that I had to leave before 8:30am in order to get the run in before he had to leave, they had an appointment so leaving late was not an option. Sadly my baby decided to sleep until after 8am, instead of waking up at 6:30. So I decided not to stress myself, and instead run in the afternoon with Lillian in the stroller. So I see her getting sleepy and put her in the stroller and got ready to go. That was the worst run of my life! It was horrible! There were bugs, it was so hot and hazey, the humidity was 94%, it wouldn't rain, the sun came out in full force, Lillian wouldn't go to sleep, I had to pee 5 minutes in, AND I had a serious weggie the whole time. It was aweful! Needless to say, we did not get 12km as I planned. But rather than being upset that I didn't run the 12km I planned to go I have decided to be happy that I did manage to run 6km despite all the horribleness!

Go me!

Countdown to 1000km!

Alright! I'm super excited! I have now run 975.11km which means I'm less than 25km away from breaking the 1000 mark! This is so CRAZY! I'm hopeful that I will hit it by Monday, but at the lastest I want to hit it before July 1st and have earned my new Garmin watch! My hubby decided that I didn't need to pay for it, mostly because he wants to use it too. So now I'm waiting until I break into the four digits to buy my new running shoes. The ones I'm using having probably got between 600 and 700km on them. The crazy thing is that's probably more than my four year old ones I replaced with my Saucony in February.

So this is my big thing this weekend. I really want to try to run the missing 24.9km in the next three days. I can do that right? I will be alone with the baby tomorrow, but Steve doesn't leave until 10:30am so he's letting me run in the am. I already have my breakfast made up and in the fridge so I can eat while I nurse Lillian and then take off with the pup. The hard thing is that Sunday I have a family picnic with my hubby's family and we'll be gone from noon until really late. But I have been saying that I miss running outside with Lillian and so am trying to switch up our routine so I run outside with her during her morning nap, which typically starts around 8:30am and goes for 1-2 hours. So wish me luck with my morning runs and hopefully I'll be able to make them a habit and keep at it until this summer heat disappears.

Oh yah! I almost forgot. I was down 1.2 lbs this week, so I'm slowly making my way toward my magic number. Now only 12.4lbs until my goal, though I may adjust it from there. If I hit that goal, I may aim for 2 extra pounds, since that would put me at 50lbs lost.

Princess Cranky Trousers.

So Princess Cranky Trousers is the nickname we gave Lillian on a rare cranky occasion. Somehow calling it cranky trousers was so much more dignified than cranky pants and it has stuck and still makes me laugh. Well tonight I was the cranky person, which is odd since I had a good day. My department has an annual picnic in a local park and that was today. Everyone loved the muffins/cupcakes I made and all the food was amazing. I got to see people I haven't seen since I left on maternity leave and everyone loved Lillian so it was really nice and we had an absolute blast. Yet that didn't stop me from being a major cranky trousers when we got home. So for a change instead of yelling at the dog or stomping around all peeved for the rest of the night I decided to channel it into something more productive. I ran on the treadmill. Not only did I run on the treadmill but I kicked its ass.

Now you may be wondering how exactly one kicks a treadmill's ass, considering they don't technically have an ass per say. Well you ramp is up higher than you have ever gone on it, and then you stomp while running at said really high speed. Yup I showed the ol' LifeFitness a thing or two tonight, and ran at 7 miles/hr for over 3 minutes, and with that CRUSHED my old fastest time. Tonight I ran an average of 6:48 per mile. My old best, was last week and was 7:05, so it must be repeated. CRUSHED IT! So take that you stupid Waterloo Classic with your stupid race placing me second last in your stupid weird age category. No I'm not bitter at all (insert sarcasm here). Tomorrow will be a new and better day. I have a baby play-date and providing that Toronto traffic doesn't make me cry (again) it really will be a better day.

Now because she's super cute and always makes me smile, here is baby Lillian. Top: Doesn't want to share her toy with Daddy. Below: First photo she's trying to escape the chair, and next one she's playing with Oma.

Stupid numbers!

Okay, so I WAS feeling all awesome about my wicked run on Sunday since I kicked the time I wanted to beats butt (finishing in 1:12 and I wanted under 1:20) but now the results are up on line and I am totally bummed! Waterloo Classic 10k Results Now I knew I was near the back of the pack, and I was ranked 511/546 but what hurt was being 37/38 in the women aged 25-29 category. That made me sad because the one woman I beat was only like 5 minutes behind me. I feel sad now because I think that I am doing so well on this journey to health and this bums me out. I'm thrilled that my mom was at the finish line and that Steve did the race with me but I feel discouraged and really sad about doing so poorly versus everyone else.

My friend Cecilia (the one I do all the hill runs with) has a few really insightful things to say about this. She reminds me I am beating every person who doesn't run and that the only person I'm really competing against is me. I have also learned that I am a much better distance runner than speed runner. My husband has the long legs and large chest (which means good lungs) to be able to be speed runner. I have short legs, but can run a pace forever which gives me the ability to go long distances. But despite the fact that I am rocking the running a lot and becoming a much healthier person, I'm still really bummed about being second last. Stupid numbers!

Nothing Really New.

I think my title says it all. Nothing really new to report. I spent the day resting up after my record smashing run yesterday and visiting with my mother and stepfather who came up to take care of Lillian while we ran. We've been having a blast. Tonight my husband and I took them out to dinner at the Mandarin to celebrate both Father's Day and my stepfather retiring. We had a wonderful time and it was totally worth me saving up most of my weekly flex points in order to eat what I wanted. I still made really healthy choices while there but greasy food gives me a stomach ache now so it was a no brainer. So at the end of tracking it I used up my weekly points but that is what they are there for, and let's just hope I manage to flush the salt out of my body before Friday's weight in and survive my office picnic on Wednesday.

The website for my race hasn't posted any official times or photos yet but I'll be sure to link to it when it does! Have a great night everyone.

Ran my first 10k!

So the race is over and I did it! I ran the race in 1:12:21 which means I did it in less than 1:20 and hit my goal! Hurray. I am tired and have a bit of a headache (heat doesn't agree with me) but I feel like a million bucks! Now I have lots of time to train for my 15km hill run at the end of October and maybe sneak a 5 or 10k run in before then. Hope you're all doing great and thanks to everyone for believing in me. I'll write a longer blog tonight or tomorrow, once the photos and chip results are posted, with more details of the day and the run.

Only 11 Hours to Go!

So in less than 12 hours I'll be running the Waterloo Classic. This will be my first 10k race so I'm hoping to hit my goal and complete it in 80 minutes or less. If I don't however, the world will go on. I have been feeling pretty tired the last few days and my baby woke me up this morning at 5:30am so we'll see how things go. But my mom is up to watch Lillian and her and my stepdad are going to try to bring Lilly to see us finish the race and that means so much to me. I really want a photo of Steve and I finishing the race and holding up Lillian with pride!

So wish me luck and I'll try to post sometime tomorrow to let you all know how I did!

Early Weigh In.

So tonight we had company. I love to cook so company is fun for me. But since I knew we'd be eating dinner later than normal, and I don't eat anything after dinner on Thursday night so I have a consistant weigh in on Friday morning I decided to save myself the stress and just weigh in on Thursday this week. So I was down 1.2lbs today! Woo hoo! That brings me down to 157.6lbs. I really like writing that. It was also great since we hadn't seen our friends in a while and they commented on how good I look. I like when people notice that. So all around it was a good night. I used up my remaining weekly points and a few of my activity points and really enjoyed my meal, knowing that I won't have to stress about my weight in the morning.

Only three more sleeps until my 10k run on Sunday morning. Eeeeekkk! I'm nervous and excited at the same time. I feel like a kid at Christmas. I never thought I'd ever say that about a race!

Got my Run on.

So I did my hill run today and not only did we go further than last time, and in 33km/hr winds with 55km/hr wind gusts. WooT! So while I'm very sore now I'm super happy I did it. I don't plan to do another big run until my 10k on Sunday and since I've run six days in a row now I have to take tomorrow off which I am actually looking forward to for a change. Then I'll run Friday a bit, another run Saturday and aim for my 10k in under 80 minutes on Sunday. I think I can do it, but we'll see. I'm hopeful but don't want to get too excited in case I don't do it and get disappointed in myself.

I'm also doing my weight tomorrow since we're having people over for dinner tomorrow and that means eating late, which I never do. So wish me luck and have a great week.

Looking forward to a hill run.

So I had a pretty cool weekend and now am looking forward to my hill run with my friend Cecilia tomorrow. I ran on both Saturday and Sunday plus a small treadmill run yesterday (so no more thinking that I'm a lazy butt). I'm not feeling so tired either so that's a good thing. I'm a bit sad that I won't go to kickboxing this week, but for my 10k that I'm running this weekend that's probably a good thing since I think two kickboxing classes and 4 runs is what made me so tired last week. I'm hopeful that I will finish my race in 80 minutes or less. That's my goal but we'll see how it goes. I won't cry if I don't hit my goal, but I would be really proud. My Saturday run was great, then my Sunday one was VERY slow, and then my treadmill run yesterday was my fastest run EVER! My speed per km was 7:06! My old fastest was 7:15 per kilometre. I am feeling pretty proud of myself. So now I should try to take my runs a bit easy the rest of the week to save up my power for Sunday.

My race plan this week is as follows.
Monday - ran 6.4km
Tuesday - run 5-7km
Wednesday - run 14km (hill training) but take it easy
Thursday or Friday - run 6-10km once or 5k each day but easy run(s)
Saturday - take the day off
Sunday - run my 10k race.

I'm really excited today because I picked up my Garmin watch yesterday and really want to get out on a run so I can try it out. Also, Lillian had her first tooth break through the gums on the weekend so my little baby now has her first tooth. Bottom left is the one that made it out first. She's had a bit of a fever for the last few days but now she's doing much better and seems to be a lot happier. Enjoy the photo of the cutie with her new little white tooth.

Feel like a Lazy butt.

Okay I think the title says it all. I feel like a lazy butt today. I'm really sore and tired and my husband is concerned that I'm overtraining so he told me to take yesterday off, which I did. Today I had my weigh in and I only lost 1lbs which, as irrational as it sounds, I blame on the fact that I didn't run on Thursday. Lillian has been teething so she's been a challenge, but yesterday and today she's been princess nappy, meaning she's napping all the time. I took advantage of that today and ran 5k on our treadmill since her naps didn't work out for when I wanted to run. Then when Steve got home he noticed she's actually got her first tooth. Bottom, left has broken through the gum line and is now a white bumpy line on her gums. Very cute, but beside the point. I had planned to run a 10k run today but only did 5. My husband is concerned I'm so tired from overtraining and so he thinks I should take it easy for the rest of tonight, but I feel like a total lazy butt. So now it's 9pm and I'm feeling like a total lazy butt and wishing I weren't so sore so that I could run. C'est la vie! Tomorrow is a new day and hopefully I'll get to run 10k.

I'm gonna hurt tomorrow.

So I got to my second kickboxing class tonight. Yippy! I'm especially proud since my little one wasn't having a very good day today. She was really sleepy and napped for twice the normal time but when she wasn't napping she was really cranky. Teething isn't so much fun, but the napping let me do a lot of things today so that was good. Though fussy baby makes for a long day so when I was at kickboxing today I worked really hard, even on the squat kicks which usually I hate. I was sweating so bad by the end of it that I almost fell over during the cool down because my arms were so sweaty.

So when I got back home I really enjoyed my after workout snack, a nice piece of fresh bread with some nutella on it. Mmmmmm! Okay I have to go clean up my baby's toys and get ready for bed. Hope you're all kicking butt in your own workout journeys.

Kickboxing kicked my butt!

But in a good way. I have to say I'm feeling it today, though not as much as last year when I went for the first time ever. That just goes to show you how much fitter I am now, and how much stronger my legs have gotten. Go me. I do feel it in the muscles where I had to squat and kick since those don't get used so much in running and also in my lower back from the twisting and turning to punch. But it's all sore from being pushed, not hurting like I did something wrong so I will live with it. I don't mind the hard workout pain.

In more exciting news I'm going to buy a running watch next week. Woot! I found out the Garmin Forerunner 405 is on sale (with a coupon) at Costco next week and I happen to have that coupon. So I plan to swing by on Monday and pick myself up one. They are crazy expensive but since I'm so crazy about running I feel it's a good investment. I also LOVE to track my stats so this will help with that a lot. Isn't it pretty! I just hope that they have black in stock so I'm not stuck with the ugly green one. I also have another hill training run planned for next week with my friend and I can't wait. I love the hill runs. They make me feel alive and knowing that I am doing the actual hills I'll be running in October rocks!

I love cold weather!

You all might think I'm crazy but I enjoy the cooler days. Today was only 15 degrees for my run and even with the baby and dog I feel I rocked it. I was a bit tired but I kept going and did a route I don't do every often and so 11.6km later I feel amazing! Tonight we're making pizza, our Sunday tradition, and I'm pumped knowing that I kicked butt in my run. The next two weeks are going to be crazy activity wise for us since our 10k in now less than 2 weeks away and I'm starting kickboxing on Monday. My hubby wants to get in a good 6 or 7 practice runs before our race so that will take up a lot of his time, and I want to do a few myself too so we're going to be very active for the next bit. Plus my mom and step-dad are going to come up and take care of my baby for the 10k run, which happens to fall on father's day so that's great. I'm hopeful we can all go out to dinner on Monday then too. So my yucky week turned out pretty good today, except for the fact that all the stores I wanted to go to that list hours for Sunday were closed for some silly reason. Oh well saved my money

Oh yah. I weighed myself today for my x-weighted challenge and I was 159lbs! Woot! Let's hope that sticks around until Friday.  ;)

Lillian with her great-grandpa.
When will this heat finally break? We keep getting rain but it doesn't do anything to make the humidity go away. I've seriously had enough of it. I don't like having to wait until 9:20pm to go run on my treadmill because it's so hot during the day. I much prefer running outside with Lillian in the stroller. Part of me worries that when my kids are big I won't be able to run anymore because I'll be so used to having a stroller, though I must say I really enjoy my solo runs. With all the practice I get in with Lillian when I go without her I often break a time record.
Lillian with her great-grandma.

I'm really glad this week is over. It's been a bit of an emotional one for me and I don't really know why. My husband was gone a day and out one night and I just felt super lonely and like there was always stuff to do around the house no matter how many hours I spent doing things. I have also been hungrier than normal and a bit cranky. Being cranky is nothing new for me but this week it was a bit of an extreme. So today my wonderful husband took care of our baby all day and let me do things I wanted and needed to do, like update Lillian's scrapbook (I was stuck at Christmas) and weedwack the lawn (my favourite outside chore). Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to put up the wall mounted baby gate (hurray for playing with my drill) and get a nice long run in, providing that it's not too hot.

Oh look I think it's starting to rain now. Hopefully the heat will go away this time for a few days.

Down 1lbs!

Woot! So my fat week wasn't as bad as I thought. I still managed to lose 1lbs and that pushed me into the 150's! So I'm excited. Granted I weighed this much last Sunday but I weigh in on Fridays and last week I was still 160.6 on Friday so yippy. I'm happy, and hopefully this little save will keep me inspired to eat really well this week, and since there is no special occasion that would call for me eating out this week. Maybe we'll hit Williams or Subway one day, or even TCBY but otherwise I'll stick to good healthy home cooking. After all Sunday is pizza day at our house so that'll be nice!

Wowie it's been a while.

I just looked back over my running for the last while and today was my longest run since my half-marathon in April. No wonder my legs feel like jello! A 14.1km hill run is comparable to a 21km flat run any day AND it was the first time running on half of those hills. Part of them are in my 6.4 and 5.2km routes but some of them were new but what a workout! I did the hill run with my coworker friend and it felt invigorating! My friend is a hardcore runner (see her blog here) and she inspires me all the time. I jogged for the first 1/4 of the run without a rest because I wanted to make sure she had a decent workout. In total I think I walked for between 5 and 10 minutes for the whole run which for me is just amazing! I'm so proud but I already know I'm going to hurt tomorrow! And on another positive note all fears of being up tomorrow are gone. I can deal with a small weight increase if I can run those hills! No biggie! Wonder what I'll manage to run this weekend! :)

Nothing Exciting.

Nothing too exciting to report. It rained today so I didn't run. My foot is hurting so I couldn't go to kick boxing. My baby is teething so I had to carry her around for most of the day but I love her anyway and I'm having a hungry day where I want to eat everything in site. I hope it doesn't come back to bite me on my weigh in on Friday, but I'm not going to worry about that today. I have stayed the same two weeks since January and the rest have been losses so if I do go up this week because of the hungrys I'll live. Life's too short to get stressed over things like that. So here's a cute photo of my monkey and tomorrow I start training for my October hill run with a friend. I'll let you know how our mini run (13km instead of the 15km the route is) goes and how brutal the hills really are, and NO we will not be running by the crazy pheasant tomorrow.

Adventures in Country Running: the Pheasant Edition

There are things that you worry about when you're running, things like your stroller going down a hill or your dog pulling you down a hill or dudes in vans who stop to ask you about your dog and then abduct you but the last thing I ever thought would give me trouble when running is pheasants. Picasso and I were attacked by a crazy psycho pheasant who seemed to think that us running by its nest was a reason to freak out. So here's what happened.

We were doing sprints while running today and I was running fast, and I heard rustling in the bush. I glanced over quickly to see a sparrow fly by and then out of the corner of my eye I saw it. The bird came flying out of the bush and came after us, and actually landed on my dog! I pulled her leash and knocked it off and it came flying back at us, so we huffed it and ran faster than the evil bird could fly. It was absolutely CRAZY! Now I can laugh about it and my husband wanted to know why I didn't take a photo of it with my ipod, and frankly all I could do was run the hell away from that evil bird!!

So the lesson of today's blog is avoid running right along the bush so that if some crazy evil bush animal runs or flies out at you, you have a chance to get away before it scratches or pecks your eyes out!
